Month in review.
Hmm. I think Guys was the worst offense of the series thus far - filled with trite and unnecessary characters and “homages” to other independent comics. (I’m sorry, this isn’t about those comics, it’s just that they did not add anything to a story that was 99% crap. Boring. Shit.)
There were elements of actual story, the bits with Cerebus becoming bartender, the drama with Bear, and the Joanne bits, but they sadly were few and far between, and the rest was just complete twaddle.
Rick’s Story is showing much promise, thus far.
(And, yes, I know Sim wrote Cerebus more for himself than anyone else. However, in a business field, you need to ensure that your product is accessible to many readers. Apparently there were enough to keep the money coming in, so good on him for that - but, once again, I would have stopped buying the comic if I had been buying it monthly.)
The dream continues, where Cerebus and Joanne get married; everyone’s applauding, and Cerebus, egomaniac that he is, absorbs the praise and adulation, until he realises that it’s for Joanne, when he sees her wearing his amulets and carrying his sword. He wakes up and screams for her to leave; she protests, talks about his ‘scorecard’, which is actually his calendar counting down until he leaves… which he tells her and she beats him with her purse and leaves.
Rick (looking much older, so time has certainly passed) shows up.
Joanne nags Cerebus to go to another tavern for dinner; it’s operated by Marty and his wife. On the way back, Joanne and Cerebus have an argument (mostly on Joanne’s part, Cerebus actually tries to diffuse it, to no avail.)
In bed, Cerebus has a strange dream. I cannot remotely touch upon it any better than the Q&A in the listing at Cerebus Wiki does, so here’s the link - http://www.cereb.us/wiki/index.php?title=Issue_218
Cerebus is already feeling trapped, hating the rhetoric of the relationship with Joanne – she’s very mundane and he’s not. Also, she’s falling in love with him; I’m not sure what his feelings are, entirely. (I suspect he does have feelings for her and that’s one reason why he wants to run away.) He’s also counting down until Bear’s return (not sure why he has it decided that way, but he expects Bear to return at the end of the season.)
Joanne (the neighbor from the reality Dave showed Cerebus where Jaka and Cerebus lived together and he cheated on Jaka with Joanne and Jaka killed herself as a result) shows up at the tavern. Cerebus tries to explain why they seem so familiar to each other, and she leaves. He spends several days getting drunk and recovering.
Joanne shows up again, dressed rather sexily, and asks him if he wants to go upstairs; he says yes, but she’s startled by his body after he comes out from behind the bar.
There’s some rather fun interaction and dialogue and interjections in the narrative from ‘Dave’.
(Happy birthday to me…)
Cerebus is the barkeep, but nobody comes. He gets tired of wearing the shirt and tie and pants and shoes and strips of most of them, wearing only the shirt, collar unbuttoned. Thatcher comes in and starts rattling off demerits for lack of following dress code.
He mentally assaults her, puts her in a chair and then sends a message to Cirin – leave Cerebus be, unless she wants to pick up where they left off in the throne room.
Some fop is offended at the lack of quality of Cerebus’ ale.
An ugly woman comes and tells Cerebus she wants to have sex with him; he turns her away and spends the night arguing with himself: a) whether this makes him a faggot and b) should he sleep with an ugly woman just b/c it’s been a couple of years since he got laid.
Again, I’m really surprised I’ve not heard people rant how Sim is a homophobe with the vehement attitude Cerebus (and others) have shown in regards to “faggots”.
See you Monday. Hoping this gets better.
Also - tonight, I have 42 auctions ending on eBay. I’m selling comic books to catch up on my bills. There is a misc Cerebus lot, priced cheap. Please consider bidding on my lots? Thanks - http://bit.ly/terrysebay is the custom short link.
Cerebus and Bear say their goodbyes; everyone else is already gone. The majority of the issue is Cerebus having a mental argument with inner voices, calling himself a faggot and other such delightful things.
Thatcher shows up to inform him that since the tavern no longer has a barkeep, he’ll have to move to another tavern. He says he’ll stay and be the barkeep.
Wow, it’s almost like there’s a story.
So, something actually kind of happens. Bear’s on-again, off-again girl, Ziggy shows up. She’s a horribly controlling bore and nobody likes her, except Bear who’s wrapped around her finger.
Everyone decides to “head south”, which pisses Cerebus off. Bear comes down to say goodbye, b/c he and Ziggy are also heading south and Cerebus tells him it’ll never work and Bear throws a mug at the window.
…please tell me this ends soon and the next book actually has a story.
In the past several issues, we’ve seen the weather change from Winter to Spring to Summer and now it’s Winter again. How fucking delightful.
And winter is ending. And Mrs. Thatcher is consulted to deal with one of the more offensive tavern-goers. And I couldn’t give less of a fuck.
Oh, dear God. I get the feeling nothing happens during the entirety of Guys, does it?
So, in this issue… oh, fuck, it doesn’t matter. Nothing happens and it’s stupid. (Oh, we finally see Prince Keef.)
Many of the characters in the tavern are parodies of characters from other independent comics. Still doesn’t make it any more entertaining.
