Month in Review - September - Guys, mostly
Month in review. Hmm.  I think Guys was the worst offense of the series thus far - filled with trite and unnecessary characters and “homages” to other independent comics.  (I’m sorry, this isn’t about those comics, it’s just that they did not add anything to a story that was 99% crap.  Boring.  Shit.) There were elements of actual story, the bits with Cerebus...

Cerebus #225 “Rick's Story, part 6”
Rick’s Story has changed to a parable, Biblical-style, the Gospel of Cerebus, is you will. Cerebus is going batty arguing with himself, part of him wants to leave, without Rick, and the other part feels that Rick is too vulnerable, that the world would destroy him if left on his own. Cerebus hears a crash and thinks “Something Fell”, and sees Cirin for a moment, but then...

Cerebus #224 “Rick's Story, part 5”
The next morning, a hungover Cerebus is behind the bar, fuming over Joanne and Rick, and planning how to get revenge on them both. Rick shows up, a gash on the side of his head. He’s woozy, confused, but tells Cerebus that Joanne never showed up. Cerebus launches into a tirade about how women cannot be trusted, when Joanne shows up and offers her excuse that her mother was sick. Cerebus...

Cerebus #223 “Rick's Story, part 4”
We see from Cerebus’ count that the day of his planned departure has arrived. He’s still there, Rick’s there, and Rick is correcting his earlier (drunken) story of how he got the scar on his chest. Joanne shows up, and Rick being weak (again, I don’t see a strong male character in this comic book – all the males are either cariactures or weak – especially Cerebus), falls...

Cerebus #222 “Rick's Story, part 3”
Well, I do have to say that, unlike GUYS, RICK’S STORY has a lot of promise – already in 3 issues, we’ve had more story and character development than in all of GUYS. We start with Rick working on his book and Cerebus behind the bar, having an internal debate over whether he’s leaving in two days or staying and whether he wants to be around the “girly” Rick, so forth and so on. ...

Cerebus #221 “Rick's Story, part 2”
Cerebus is still mad at Rick the next morning, but finds it hard to stay (terribly) mad at Rick. Rick reads from his read, and after they debate the merits of truths and lies in storytelling, Rick goes to see Cerebus’ quarters, where we discover Cerebus is stupid and been living in the cellar, taking cold showers, when he has a fireplace, huge bed and water heater upstairs. (He’s...

Cerebus #220, “Rick's Story, part 1”
Rick is writing his own read, “Rick’s Story”, his answer to Oscar’s “Daughter of Palnu”. Rick and Cerebus sit and tell stories and jokes and share in the laughs, until Rick pokes fun at Cerebus for being a Bartender-Pope. He keeps laughing at Cerebus who gets angrier, until he drops/knocks over a glass, which startles Rick, who says “Something Fell” - and Cerebus has a flash of a...

Cerebus #219, “Guys, part 19”
The dream continues, where Cerebus and Joanne get married; everyone’s applauding, and Cerebus, egomaniac that he is, absorbs the praise and adulation, until he realises that it’s for Joanne, when he sees her wearing his amulets and carrying his sword. He wakes up and screams for her to leave; she protests, talks about his ‘scorecard’, which is actually his calendar...

Cerebus #218 “Guys, part 18”
Joanne nags Cerebus to go to another tavern for dinner; it’s operated by Marty and his wife. On the way back, Joanne and Cerebus have an argument (mostly on Joanne’s part, Cerebus actually tries to diffuse it, to no avail.) In bed, Cerebus has a strange dream. I cannot remotely touch upon it any better than the Q&A in the listing at Cerebus Wiki does, so here’s the link -...

Cerebus #217 “Guys, part 17”
Cerebus is already feeling trapped, hating the rhetoric of the relationship with Joanne – she’s very mundane and he’s not. Also, she’s falling in love with him; I’m not sure what his feelings are, entirely. (I suspect he does have feelings for her and that’s one reason why he wants to run away.) He’s also counting down until Bear’s return (not sure why...

Cerebus #216 “Guys, part 16”
Joanne (the neighbor from the reality Dave showed Cerebus where Jaka and Cerebus lived together and he cheated on Jaka with Joanne and Jaka killed herself as a result) shows up at the tavern. Cerebus tries to explain why they seem so familiar to each other, and she leaves. He spends several days getting drunk and recovering. Joanne shows up again, dressed rather sexily, and asks him if he wants...

Cerebus #215 “Guys part 15”
(Happy birthday to me…) Cerebus is the barkeep, but nobody comes. He gets tired of wearing the shirt and tie and pants and shoes and strips of most of them, wearing only the shirt, collar unbuttoned. Thatcher comes in and starts rattling off demerits for lack of following dress code. He mentally assaults her, puts her in a chair and then sends a message to Cirin – leave Cerebus be,...

Cerebus #214 “Guys part 14”
Cerebus and Bear say their goodbyes; everyone else is already gone. The majority of the issue is Cerebus having a mental argument with inner voices, calling himself a faggot and other such delightful things. Thatcher shows up to inform him that since the tavern no longer has a barkeep, he’ll have to move to another tavern. He says he’ll stay and be the barkeep. Wow, it’s...

Cerebus #213 “Guys part 13”
So, something actually kind of happens. Bear’s on-again, off-again girl, Ziggy shows up. She’s a horribly controlling bore and nobody likes her, except Bear who’s wrapped around her finger. Everyone decides to “head south”, which pisses Cerebus off. Bear comes down to say goodbye, b/c he and Ziggy are also heading south and Cerebus tells him it’ll never work and Bear...

Cerebus #212 “Guys part 12”
In the past several issues, we’ve seen the weather change from Winter to Spring to Summer and now it’s Winter again. How fucking delightful. And winter is ending. And Mrs. Thatcher is consulted to deal with one of the more offensive tavern-goers. And I couldn’t give less of a fuck.

Cerebus #211 “Guys part 11”
Oh, dear God. I get the feeling nothing happens during the entirety of Guys, does it? So, in this issue… oh, fuck, it doesn’t matter. Nothing happens and it’s stupid. (Oh, we finally see Prince Keef.) Many of the characters in the tavern are parodies of characters from other independent comics. Still doesn’t make it any more entertaining.

Personal note - Selling comics
I am selling some comic books on eBay, to help catch up on my bills.  I’m working part time for minimum wage at a no-kill animal shelter, and prior to that I was unemployed for ten of the previous 13 months.  I’m behind on mortgage and I need help spreading my link to my auctions. I implore you to look and see if there’s anything you’re interested in.  Even if not, please...

Cerebus #210 “guys part 10”
Bear and Cerebus finish their game; Bear wins, after telling Cerebus that he won’t be doing any of his “girly” complaints. Later, while Mrs. Thatcher is instructing the men at the tavern on the expectations of them while some random woman does a strip tease out in the field (that the guys can see, but Thatcher’s back is to.) Again, I ask, what is the fucking point? This is just...

Cerebus #209 “Guys, part 9”
Cerebus gets Bear to read the Graphic Read, but Bear doesn’t like it as much as Cerebus did. So he gets Prince Mick and Harrison to read it, but they like it for different reasons, and Cerebus sulks, tearing up his Dandy Don hat. Bear then lays into Cerebus, verbally setting him straight and telling him off right proper, for once. That was the only entertaining part, getting to see Bear...

Cerebus #208 “Guys, part 8”
Some tramp is in the bar, flirting with Cerebus, but he takes too long and Prince Mick takes her up to his room for a roll instead. The rejection sends Cerebus into the bottle (or bucket, as the case may be.) We see Cirinists prepare for the bonfire, there’s an orgy (o.0), and then it’s Winter and Bear and Cerebus are playing Five Bar Gate and a guy shows up with super-hero reads. ...

Cerebus #207 “Guys, part 7”
I’m guessing the entire book “Guys” takes place in the tavern. Mister Kingsley (a riff on Norman Mailer) arrives at the tavern, after scaring off his Cirinist transcriber, and while he sits and takes notes and Cerebus, Marty and Bear tell jokes, Mrs. Thatcher comes to interrogate Kingsley, who ends up turning the tables on Thatcher. Cerebus (who is apparently still not drinking) gets bored...

Cerebus #206, “Guys, part 6”
Cerebus’ eye bandage pops off and it’s discovered he has two eyes, despite the various stories he’s told about losing the eye. Marty (a rip on Marty Feldman), Boobah, Bear, Greggo (apparently A parody of Uncle Greggo from the comic Very Vicky) are all at the bar, drinking. Nothing actually happens of any significance. If there’s a story, I haven’t seen it yet. ...

Cerebus #205 “Guys: part 5”
Cerebus, freaking out because he thought he lost both ears, is relieved to discover that he still has one ear left. Talking to Bear about it, Bear gets pissed and slugs Cerebus a good one, then leaves. Mostly sober, Cerebus is talking to Harrison (the barkeep), when a gentleman named Alec shows up to take his grandmother, who is the person that thus far has appeared to be Bacchus, home. (I have...

Cerebus #203 “Guys: part 3”
Told from Cerebus’ drunken point of view, this is just a hodge-podge of moments, a couple lucid, mostly delusional, confused, half-awake, etc. Rather jumbled and confusing, which is the point, of course. Entirely unsatisfying and mostly unreadable. Sigh.

Cerebus #201/202 “Guys: part 1 and 2”
201: We find Cerebus sitting in a tavern, on the Wall of T’si. Mrs. Thatcher shows up, and through conversation, we discover Cerebus was gone for four years, though Cirin returned much earlier, proclaiming her victory (and Terim’s) over Cerebus (and Tarim.) The Cirinist culture has continued, despite the destruction of Iest. Prince Mick is in the tavern, and is given a cold shoulder...
